This year, Kilifi County will be observing World Hypertension Day with the theme “Measure Your Blood Pressure Accurately, Control It, Live Longer,” with a focus on enhancing awareness and precision in blood pressure measurement techniques.
World Hypertension Day is recognized worldwide to underscore the significance of monitoring blood pressure and to raise public awareness regarding the impact of hypertension on individuals.
According to the World Health Organization, hypertension is the primary risk factor for cardiovascular diseases and a leading cause of premature mortality globally. In Kenya, it is estimated that the prevalence of hypertension is approximately 24%, with over half of the population having never undergone blood pressure screening.
In light of this, the Department of Health is calling upon all healthcare professionals, health establishments, and key stakeholders to bolster their promotional and preventive efforts, particularly in blood pressure screening and lifestyle management, in order to mark this May Measurement Month.
