Working in partnership with First Lady Susanne Mung’aro and the Kilifi County government, the Kilifi Department of Health has taken the initiative in addressing the prevention and response to Tunguasis.
Dr. Lynne Elson led a one-day meeting of public health officers aimed at coordinating activities and aligning them with the county’s AWP in order to effectively combat the issue.
Tunguasis, also known as Jigger infestation or Funza, is a skin condition caused by female sand fleas that burrow under the skin. It is prevalent in the county, affecting 1-10 percent of the population and having a significant impact on schools and villages, particularly in Kilifi South, Kaloleni, Rabai, and Magarini.
The Kilifi County Government is fully committed to addressing the jigger problem, as outlined in Governor H.E Gideon Maitha Mung’aro’s Manifesto, and is working closely with the Department of Health and other partners. Our aim is to find local solutions and collaborate with the community to resolve this public health issue, ensuring the well-being of all residents.
