The National World Toilet day (WTD) observance was held at Kidutani Primary School in Mwembekati, Chonyi Sub-County, Kilifi County. The event’s theme was “Accelerating Change by doing Whatever you can.” This marked the culmination of the Kenya Sanitation Week (KSW) observance, which started on Monday 13th, and also served as a celebration for Kilifi South Constituency (hosting Chonyi and Kilifi South Sub-Counties) being declared Open Defecation Free (ODF) through the Kenya Sanitation Enabling Environment Project (KSEEP), with support from USAID and UNICEF.
The County Sanitation Champion was crowned during the event, and the Chief guest, Kilifi Deputy Governor Madam Flora Mbetsa Chibule, graciously accepted the honor.
Various stakeholders, including representatives from the National Ministries of Health, Water, and Education, WASH partners, the Provincial administration, and local political leaders led by MNA Hon. Ken Chonga, were also present. They all extended their congratulations to the Kilifi South community for becoming the 3rd and 4th Sub-Counties to achieve ODF status, following Rabai and Kilifi North.
Hon. Clara Chonga, who represented the CECM Health and Sanitation Services, pledged to intensify efforts in the remaining 4 Sub-Counties to ensure that the entire County reaches ODF status by December 2024, in line with the County’s Sanitation and Hygiene Roadmap. In addition, she emphasized the importance of sustaining the positive behavioral changes in the already declared ODF Sub-Counties.
