As indicated by the 2019 census data, 85% of this problem is concentrated in 15 specific counties. The primary objective of KSA is to advocate for enhanced sanitation and hygiene practices in these counties with the ultimate goal of eradicating open defecation by the year 2025.

Recently, Kilifi County hosted a two-day Quarterly Review Meeting at the prestigious Diamond Conference Centre in Malindi. The event convened a gathering of delegates from national ministries, the 15 designated Kenya Sanitation Alliance (KSA) counties, and various sanitation partners. The primary objectives of the meeting were to evaluate the progress made towards sanitation targets and to introduce the Rural and Urban Sanitation and Hygiene System (RuSH).

H.E Flora Mbetsa Chibule, the Deputy Governor of Kilifi County, graced the event as the distinguished guest of honor. She urged all counties to actively support the agenda of the Kenya Sanitation Alliance (KSA), stressing the importance of utilizing sanitation and hygiene budget allocations to their maximum potential. Additionally, she expressed gratitude towards UNICEF and USAID for their increased assistance through the Kenya Sanitation Enabling Environments Project (KSEEP Phase II) in the 15 KSA counties.

In Kilifi County, the project is currently underway in the sub-counties of Malindi, Magarini, Kaloleni, and Ganze. The overarching objective is to achieve Open Defecation Free (ODF) status in the remaining 1,216 villages. Kilifi County has developed a comprehensive Sanitation and Hygiene Roadmap, with the ambitious target of attaining the ODF milestone by December 2024.
