IFAS Training

Consulting
The Kilifi Department of Health and Sanitation Services is currently carrying out a 3-day training program for healthcare workers focused on Iron and Folic Acid Supplementation (IFAS).
Iron deficiency is the most common type of micronutrient deficiency worldwide, particularly affecting children and women of reproductive age. Anaemia related to pregnancy poses a significant public health issue, with dire consequences for both mothers and their babies. This problem is widespread in low and middle-income countries like Kenya. In Kilifi, almost fifty percent of pregnant women are affected by anaemia, negatively impacting the health of both mother and child.
IFAS is an essential nutritional intervention to prevent anaemia during pregnancy. However, it has been identified that there are gaps in knowledge among healthcare workers regarding this intervention upon careful examination.
Therefore, this program is also important for training the trainers (TOTs) who have a key role in improving community healthcare. By sharing knowledge and skills related to IFAS with healthcare providers at various levels, TOTs help to strengthen community capacity. This empowerment enables local healthcare workers to provide high-quality care, promote preventive measures, and effectively manage health challenges in order to achieve the ultimate goal of reducing anaemia prevalence among Women of Reproductive Age as part of the Global Nutrition Target.
