Ending Open Defecation

Consulting
The County Department of Health and Sanitation Services is currently engaged in efforts to eradicate open defecation in Kilifi by promoting the construction and use of latrines in every household, as well as advocating for the practice of hand hygiene following toilet use. Community involvement is integral to the success of this initiative, with local knowledge being recognized as invaluable.
Yesterday, health officers facilitated discussions in 14 villages located within Kaloleni Sub-County. The primary goal of these discussions is to raise awareness within communities about the negative impacts of open defecation on food and water contamination, which can result in the prevalence of diarrheal diseases. This initiative is in line with the County’s Sanitation and Hygiene Roadmap, which aims to completely eliminate open defecation by the end of 2024.
Sanitation endeavors are currently being carried out in Malindi, Kaloleni, Magarini, and Ganze Sub-Counties, with support from USAID and UNICEF through the Kenya Sanitation Enabling Environment Project (KSEEP).
